Caryl Wilma Peterson Hepworth, 93, passed away on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, in Lindon, Utah. Born October 21, 1931, in Salt Lake City, she was the oldest child and only daughter of Ervin Miller and Grace (Bunker) Peterson. After graduating from East High School in 1948, she studied at the University of Utah where she was affiliated with Lambda Delta Sigma and Delta Gamma sororities.
On March 19, 1951, she married John L. (Jack) Hepworth in the Salt Lake Temple with Elder Spencer W. Kimball performing the sealing. Jack passed away in 2012 after more than 61 years of marriage.
As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Caryl was called to many teaching and leadership positions at both ward and stake levels. She served as a Stake Indexing Leader, was on the Stake Activities Committee and filled many music positions. She served as a volunteer missionary on Temple Square in Salt Lake City for ten years before serving as a full-time missionary in Hawaii from 1990-1993 while her husband was Director of the Hawaii Temple Visitors Center. In addition, she filled a church service mission in Salt Lake City (Airport/Temple Square Tours) plus a stake mission in Brigham City.
Caryl began piano lessons at the age of five and music soon became an essential part of her life. As early as age 11, she accompanied her father as he sang throughout the Salt Lake Valley. She taught both group organ and piano lessons and had scores of private piano students. She accompanied countless vocal and instrumental soloists and choral groups throughout her life. Being hired as the Box Elder High School accompanist from 1967-1980 was a choice opportunity. Not only was she involved musically, but she was able to be with her six children during their high school years.
Before marriage and beginning their family, Caryl was employed by Business Mens’ Assurance Co., the University of Utah’s Accounting and Athletic Departments, Western Steel, the Utah High School Activities Association, and the Counter-Intelligence Corps of the U.S. Army at Fort Douglas. Once their children were in school, she worked at Box Elder High School and was then employed by D. C. MacKay, M.D., until her retirement in 2001. She was a charter member and past president of the Cecilian Music Society and past president of the Bear River Mental Health Association.
