Listen to Obituary

Eugene Kay Israelsen, affectionately known as Gene, passed away on October 18, 2025, in his beloved hometown of Hyrum, Utah. He was born on June 28, 1936, in Hyrum, to Eilert Kenneth and Viola Mae, where he would go on to leave a profound legacy grounded in love, laughter, and commitment to his community and family.

Gene dedicated 22 years of his career to the Water Research Laboratory at Utah State University, where his contributions were invaluable. Following his retirement, he continued to inspire others as a consultant for an additional 17 years. His academic journey began at Lincoln Elementary School, moved through South Cache High School, and culminated with a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering and a Master's Degree in Engineering from Utah State Agricultural College.

Throughout his life, Gene's service extended far beyond his professional endeavors. He took great pride in serving a 2 1/2 year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Norway Tromso Mission. Gene was deeply involved in his faith community, serving in various roles, including Scouting, Sunday School, High Council, and Bishop. He brought humor and warmth to these positions, engaging with people of all ages and creating a lasting impact on their lives.

After Gene returned home from his mission, he met LaRee Beyeler and they were married in the Logan LDS Temple on July 7, 1959. It was a double wedding with LaRee and her twin sister LaRue, the joy of marrying a twin. They were blessed with 8 children.

He served in the US Army. This took he and his new family on tour of the United States, including Maryland and Texas.

Gene was a man of many passions. He found joy in fishing, hiking, camping, building canoes, and nurturing his garden. Whether teasing his loved ones or stacking firewood with a smile, he embodied a fun-loving spirit that drew people to him. His clever puns and ability to lighten any situation made him a cherished friend and family member.

He leaves behind a loving family that includes his children: Greg (Jill) Israelsen, Lori (Brent) Gillies, Paige (John) Edmondson, Drew (Ami) Israelsen, Wayne (Kathleen) Israelsen, Matt Israelsen, and Mandy Garcia. Gene was a proud grandfather to 24 grandchildren and 32 ¾ great-grandchildren, who will carry forward his legacy of love and laughter. He is also survived by his brothers, Leo and Lorin, who shared countless memories and adventures with him.

He is preceded in death by his first wife, LaRee, his son Kenneth, as well as his parents. Gene also mourned the loss of his brothers Arvel and Marlin, his sister Vione, and his son-in-law John Garcia.

Eugene was introduced by a mutual friend to Leslie Carol in October of 2008, at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints singles dance. After 2 ½ years of dating they decided they had found love again and decided to marry. They were married March 27th, 2010, and then married and sealed in the Logan Temple on March 31st, 2011.

Eugene welcomed Carol’s 5 daughters Tammy Rose, Heidi Cox (husband Ken Cox), Robyn Rose, Wendy Rose (husband Miguel Hernandez) and Michelle Thatcher (husband Mark Thatcher), 11 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Eugene and Carol were blessed with 17 ½ years of hiking, Mountain Man activities, walks, working together to maintain their beautiful yard and lots of puzzles.

Eugene and Carol served as Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints ward missionaries for 3 ½ years until their health prevented it.

Eugene battled dementia and several health problems in the later years. On October 18th, 2025, he returned home to his heavenly father.

We love you Eugene and we will miss you dearly.
