Our loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Joyce Martha Hoehner Thurman, 85, passed away on Monday, October 9, 2025 at Sunrise of Sandy Retirement Center.

She was born on August 15, 1940 in Salt Lake City, Utah, a daughter of George Carl and Martha Anna Kasworm Hoehner. She almost died of spinal meningitis as an infant.

She went to South High School in 1957, she could not attend graduation because of a severe sunburn and they had to send her diploma.

Joyce married Gerald Irvine Thurman on August 16, 1959 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He preceded her in death on October 28, 1999.

She worked for an insurance company for Surety Life. As a secretary, very good typist, dictaphone and shorthand. She worked for Ohio Casualty Insurance for many years after raising a family, a daughter and a son. She also worked at the Bank One/First Utah Bank, and Sandy Senior Center for many years.

Joyce was an avid camper, traveling the state to almost every campground her favorite in Kodachrome Basin. She loved the giant monuments. She was an accomplished painter and took up tap dancing in her later years belonging to the Time Steppers traveling throughout the state performing. She loved to knit and made all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren Christmas socks.

She’s been a long-term resident of Sandy City from the early 60’s.

The family would like to thank Sunrise Staff and Inspiration Hospice for the excellent care that they provided for our mother.

Surviving are two children: Greg (Connie E.) Thurman of Sandy; Robyn Thibeault of Tollesen, Arizona; four grandchildren, Cameron (Aubry) Thibeault; Brendan Thibeualt; Quinn (Brittany) Thurman; Bryce (Delaney) Thurman; seven great grandchildren, River Thurman, Nova Thurman, Knox Thurman, Milo Thurman, Ace Thurman, Jovie Joyce Thurman and Tilly Thurman, and one brother Carl (Ima Jean) Hoehner of Pocatello, ID.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Jerry Thurman and her brother Harold (Julie) Hoehner.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, October 16, 2025 at 11:30 am at St. Thomas Moore Catholic Church, 3015 Creek Road, Cottonwood Heights, Utah 84093. A viewing will be held at St. Thomas Moore Catholic Church on Wednesday, October 15th from 6:00 to 7:30 pm

Interment will be in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Salt Lake City following the mass.
