Julie Ann Clay

May 31, 1956 — August 3, 2025

Midvale

Julie Ann Clay, 69, of Midvale, Utah, passed away on August 3, 2025.

Julie was born on May 31, 1956, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Wallace and Kaye Clay. She grew up in Belmont, Massachusetts, where she graduated from Belmont High School in 1974. She attended the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and earned a Bachelor’s of Computer Science degree from the College of Engineering.

Julie worked her way through college as a medical technician and went on to combine her interest in medicine with her programming skills through her career at 3M and Intermountain Health Care, building many deep friendships along the way. She was especially proud of her success as a woman in the male-dominated field of computer programming.

In her spare time, Julie had many hobbies, including cross-stitching, sewing, and stained glass. She enjoyed singing with a local women’s chorus, The Chauntenettes. She also sang in many ward and stake choirs. Julie had set a goal to walk in a 5K, but her plans were interrupted first by COVID and later by trouble with her knees. She loved to travel and always seemed to be off on one adventure or another. In recent years, she fulfilled a long-term dream and went on a multi-month road trip through the continental United States.

Julie was devoted to her extended family. She would attend family events as well as invite cousins, nieces, and nephews to join her for travels.

Julie loved commemorating special events, marking nearly every holiday and milestone, whether big or small, with a handwritten card or emoji-filled text message.

Julie was a vital part of her ward family. She took her church callings and responsibilities very seriously. When a Ministering Sister assignment changed, she would often continue to visit and nurture that friendship that had developed.

Above all else, Julie was a devoted aunt and great-aunt to her many nieces and nephews, and her great-nieces and -nephews. And they were equally devoted to her.

Julie is survived by her brother Gordon (Ann) Clay of Fredericksburg, Virginia, and her sisters Diane (Rich) Smith of Leander, Texas, and Katie (Roger) Merrill of Little Elm, Texas, and by ten nieces and nephews and four great-nieces and -nephews. She is also survived by a wide circle of dear friends whom she cherished as family, as well as extended family members who were also dear friends.

Julie was preceded in death by her parents, Wally and Kaye Clay, and her brother Bill Clay.

A memorial service will be held on August 30, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. in the LDS chapel at 700 E 7500 South, Midvale, Utah. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., and a light luncheon will be served immediately after the service.

There were many charitable causes that Julie donated to. If you would like to donate to a cause that is meaningful to you in Julie’s honor, the family encourages you to do so.

The family would like to thank the members of the Hillcrest Ward for their kindness and service during this difficult time.

I love you in a place
Where there's no space or time
I love you for in my life
You are a friend of mine
